The tiger is a ferocious, much feared, extremely fascinating animal. Its name, tigris, derives from the Iranian term thigra, which means sharp / pointed. It spread to the West following Alexander the Great's expedition to India.
In Southeast Asia tigers were also considered protectors, it was believed that they were able to drive out demons and for this reason their image was often depicted on door posts and their sculptures placed on tombs. In Malaysia, healers could transform themselves into tigers. In Buddhism the tiger represents faith and spiritual effort.
